Chapter 5 Flashcards
Tension
A type of stress pulling of the crust
Stress
A force that acts on an area of rock to change its shape or volume
Compression
A type of stress which squeezes rock until it folds or breaks
Shearing
Stress that pushes a mass of rock in two opposite directions
Normal faults
Tension in earths crust which pulls rock apart
Hanging wall
The block of rock that lies above in a normal fault
Footwall
The rock that lies below in a normal fault
Reverse fault
The place where the rock of the crust is pushed together
Strike-slip fault
The place where plates move past each other
Plateau
A large area of flat land elevated high above sea level
Earthquake
Is the shaking that results from the sudden movement of rock along a fault
Focus
Is the area beneath earths surface where rock that is under stress breaks, triggering an earthquake.
Epicenter
The point on the surface directly above the focus
P-waves (primary waves)
Seismic waves that compress and expand the ground like an accordion
S-waves (secondary waves)
Seismic waves that vibrate side to side and up and down
