Chapter 5 Flashcards
Scaling
a formal procedure that creates a numerical
continuum upon which objects can be located
Scale
any series of items that are arranged progressively
according to a value or magnitude
Unidimensional scales
Goal is “to select a set of data items that can be empirically
demonstrated to correspond to a single social-psychological
dimension”
Multidimensional scales
Goal is to measure each of the different constructs separate,
and then combine the scores on each dimension to create an
overall measure of the multi-dimensional construct
Semantic Differential
A scaling method in which an object
is assessed by it’s activity, evaluation, and potency
Thurston Scale
the first formal technique to measure an attitude
Thurston scales allow them to give multiple answers by assigning each item on the list a score
LIkert Scale
Used to measure people’s attitudes, opinions, and
perceptions
* Response scale: Interval
– Strongly agree
– Agree
– Neutral
– Disagree
– Strongly agree
Gutman Scale
And ordinal scale with a number of statement placed in hierarchical order
Index
multi-item instruments for
measuring a single concept with several attributes
Scoring
How to weight the items in an index?
* Probably best of assigning equal weights.
Validation
Item analysis
* How well does an index relate to its individual components?
* External validation
* How well does the index predict outcomes on some external measure?
Typologies
The intersection of 2 or more variables creating a set of categories
