Chapter 5 Flashcards
How is standard form found when given slope-intercept form?
y=2/5x-3 Write the original equation
5y=5(2/5x-3) Multiply each side by 5
5y=2x-15 Use distributive property
-2x+5y=-15 Subtract 2x from each side
What is standard/general form?
Ax+By=C
How is standard form found when given two points and the slope?
(-4,3) m=-2 y-y1=m(x-x1) write point-slope form y-3=-2[x-(-4)] substitute for y1, m, x y-3=-2(x+4) simplify y-3=-2x-8 use distributive property 2x+y=-5 add 2x and 3 to each side
What is linear interpolation?
A method of estimating the coordinates of a point that lies between two given data points
What is linear extrapolation?
A method of estimating the coordinates of a point that lies to the right or left of all of the given data points
More liner data is what?
Points that form something closer to a straight line
What is slope-intercept form?
y=mx+b
What are the m and b values in slope-intercept form?
m is the slope
b is the y-intercept
Find the equation of a line that is parallel to the line y=1/2x+5 and passes through the point (2,-4)
y=1/2+5 (2,-4) y=1/2x+b -4=1/2(2)+b -4=1+b -1 -1 -5=b y=1/2x-5
Find the equation of a line that passes through the point (6,-5) and has a slope of -4
y=-4x+b -5=-4(6)+b -5=-24+b \+24 +24 19=b y=-4x+19
