Chapter 5 Flashcards
What is an experiment?
A repeatable process that gives rise to a number of outcomes.
What is an event?
A collection of one or more outcomes.
What is a sample space?
The set of all possible outcomes.
What is probability of an event?
The number of outcomes in the event / the total number of possible outcomes
What is the event P(A and B) in a Venn diagram?
The intersection between A and B.
What is the event P(A or B) in a Venn diagram?
A + B + intersection.
What is the event P(not A) in a Venn diagram?
Every other possibility other than A and the intersection.
(1 - P(A))
What must you always remember to draw when creating a Venn diagram?
The rectangular box around it.
What does mutually exclusive mean?
When events have no outcomes in common.
What does mutually exclusive outcomes look like on a Venn diagram?
Where the circles don’t cross each other, so there’s no intersection.
How do you calculate mutually exclusive events?
P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B)
What are independent events?
When one event has no effect on the other, they are independent.
How do you calculate independent events?
P(A and B) = P(A) x P(B)
What are tree diagrams used for?
Used to show the outcomes of 2 (or more) events happening in succession.
