Chapter 5 Flashcards
Polymers
A long chain substance made of bonded monomers and have identical molecular structure
Monomer
the smaller units from which larger molecules are made.
Synthetic
Something created to imitate a natural product
Polymerisation
Chemical procces of monomers joining together to form polymers
Catalysts
Chemicals that cause a reaction to happen and speed up the process
Additives
Substances added to polymers to improve their mechanical properties
Stockforms
the standard shapes and sizes in which a. material is available
Examples of working properties
How they look?
What are they commonly used for?
How do they perform in use?
What are materials selected by

Sketching
Drawing
Building models
How is paper made
1- wood pulp is obtained from cutting down trees
2- The bark and chippings are then removed and ground down or cooked with chemicals to extract the cellulose fibres.
What does corrugated cardboard do?
Gives compressive strength
What is a use of corrugated card
Packaging products for transportation
Why is it good to score cards
So it can be folded more easily
What is paper made out of
New fibres or recycled materials
Common weights used for paper
80 to 170
A weight greater than ______ is classified as a board rather than paper
170gsm
What is the thickness of board measured in
Microns
Paper types
Layout paper
Copier paper
Cartridge paper
Bleedproof paper
Sugar paper
What is offset lithography?
A commercial printing method that uses four colours, cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK).
White board
High quality white card
