Chapter 5 Flashcards
Linkage
genes with loci physically located on the same chromosome
Crossing over
events leading to genetic recombination (chromosome breakage and exchange)
Recombination
process resulting in a new allele combinations on a chromosome
How to distinguish recombinant and non-recombinant phenotypes
original combinations = non recombinant (parents gentoypes)
new combinations = recombinant (new genotypes)
Understand that percentage of recombinant phenotypes goes down the more closely genes are linked/located
genes farther apart are more likely to crossover than those close together
genetic distance is measured by recombination frequency (1% recombination = 1 map unit)
Understand when you would use a 2 point testcross vs when you would use a 3 point testcross and why.
when you have 2 genes, you use a 2 point
2 points give you the recombination frequency of each gene pair
when you have 3 genes in one cross, you use a 3 point
3 points can detect double crossover events
