Chapter 4.1- Basic Concepts and hydrocarbons Flashcards
1
Q
What is a hydrocarbon?
A
compounds that contain only carbon and hydrogen
2
Q
What are aliphatic hydrocarbons?
A
a hydrocarbon in which the carbon atoms are joined together in either a straight chain or branched chains
3
Q
What are alicyclic hydrocarbons?
A
carbon atoms are joined together in a ring structure but are not aromatic
4
Q
What are aromatic hydrocarbons?
A
there is at least one benzene ring in the structure
5
Q
What is a homologous series?
A
series of organic compounds that have the same functional group with successive members differing by one CH2 unit
6
Q
What are the three rules you must remember when naming organic molecules?
A
- numbers are used to indicate which carbon atom an alkyl group is joined to
- dashes are used to separate numbers
- prefixes are written in alphabetical order using the smallest numbers possible to indicate which carbon atoms they are joined onto
