Chapter 4 Vocabulary Flashcards
Row Matrix
A matrix that only has one row
Column Matrix
A matrix that only has one column
Zero Matrix
Every element in a matrix is zero
Equal Matrices
Two matrices that have the same dimensions and each element of one matrix is equal to the corresponding element of the other matrix
Scalar
A constant
Scalar Multiplication
Multiplying any matrix by a scalar
Vertex Matrix
A polygon represented by placing all of the column matrices of the coordinates of the vertices into on matrix
Transformation
A function that maps points of a primate onto its image
Translation
Occurs when a figure is moved from one location to another without changing its size, shape, or orientation
Reflection
Maps every point of a figure to an image across a line of symmetry using a reflection matrix
Rotation
Occurs when a figure is moved around a centre point, usually the origin
Determinant
The number associated with every square matrix
Second-Order Determinant
The determinant of a 2 x 2 matrix
Third-Order Determinant
A determinant of a 3 x 3 matrix
Expansion by Minors
A method of evaluating third-order determinants
Minor of an Element
The determinant formed when the row and the column containing that element are deleted
Cramer’s Rule
A method that uses determinants to solve systems of equations
Identity Matrix
A square matrix that, when multiplied by another matrix, equals the same matrix
Inverses
Two n x n matrices whose products are the identity matrix
Matrix Equation
A matrix form used to represent a system of equations
Augmented Matrix
Contains the coefficient matrix with an extra column containing the constant terms
Element
Each value in a matrix
Dilation
When a figure is enlarged or reduced
Matrix
A rectangular array of variables or constants in horizontal rows and vertical columns
