chapter 4 vocab Flashcards
Force
an action exerted on an object which may change the objects state of rest or motion
Contact forces
result from physical contact between two objects.
Field forces
does not involve physical contact between two objects. These are non-physical forces like, electromagnetic fields and the gravitationally force.
Force diagram
diagrams that show force vectors as arrows
Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist being moved or, if the object is moving, to resist a change in speed or direction.
newton’s first law
the law of inertia
Newtons first law of motion
An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion continues in motion with constant velocity (that is, constant speed in a straight line) unless the object experiences a net external force.
what is an objects nature?
maintain its state of motion or rest.
external force
a single force that acts on an object as a result of the interaction between the object and its environment.
- Net force
the vector sum of all forces acting on an object.
b. Equilibrium
the state in which the net force on an object is zero
a. Newton’s second law
i. Force is proportional to mass and acceleration
