Abrogate
To abolish, annul, eliminate, or do away with.
Ameliorate
To improve something
Capital Offences
A crime punishable by death in certain jurisdictions. This has a main focus of murder.
Derogate
to take away or detract
Dissemination
Spreading your ideas widely usually in relation to religion or personal beliefs.
Entrench
To protect and guarantee a right or freedom within the Constitution. Meaning, it cannot be changed without amending the Constitution as a whole.
Extradition
Sending an accused person to be tried in another another jurisdiction. Often this relates to people committing crimes outside of Canada, which leaves the Supreme Court with the decision of whether or not they will allow it. Dependent on the offence the person could face charges in another country
Franchise
The right to vote (with restrictions)
Freedom
The right to live your life without government interference
Inalienable Rights
Guaranteed rights that cannot be transferred from one person to another. This first appeared in the Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of Man. Specifically they were the rights to equality and liberty.
Interveners
“Friends of the Court” Third party participants in a court hearing that have a specific focus on a topic. They come into the court providing extra information that the judge may not be aware of. An example would be Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
Invoke
to put into affect or make happen
Notwithstanding Clause
Section 33 of the Charter, allowing any government (provincial or federal) to pass legislation that overrides Section 2, 7-15 of the Charter.
Override
to prevail over something else
Right
A legal, moral, or social claim that a citizen has originating from the government.
