Chapter 4 : Vector Triangle Flashcards
A vector has 2 elements -
Magnitude and Direction
Velocity has 2 elements -
Speed and Direction
Velocity vector represented by -
Direction of line drawn represents direction of Velocity vector and length of line drawn represents magnitude of velocity vector.
Types of Velocity vectors -
- Air Vector
- Wind Vector
- Ground Vector
Air Vector -
Speed and Direction of a/c relative to air.
QB: 2 elements of Air vector -
- TAS (True Air Speed)
- True Heading / Course
What is True Air Speed?
Actual speed of a/c relative to the air.
What is True heading?
True direction to which aircraft is pointing.
QB: Convention w.r.t. Wind Direction -
Wind direction is direction that wind is blowing FROM
Wind Vector -
Speed and direction FROM which wind is blowing
QB: 2 elements of Wind vector -
- Wind Speed
- Wind Direction
Ground Vector -
Speed and Direction of A/c over the ground.
QB: 2 elements of Ground vector -
- Ground Speed
- Ground Direction / Track
Ground Vector is resultant of -
Air vector and Wind vector.
In No Wind Condition; Ground Vector =
Air Vector
Symbol for Heading -
Single arrow, Indication of direction TO which A/c pointing.
Symbol for Wind -
Three arrows, Indication of direction FROM which Wind blowing.
Symbol for track -
Two arrows, Indication of direction of A/c moving over ground.
QB: Drift -
Angle between Heading and Track
QB: Port Drift -
- Track lies to LEFT of heading
- Drift SUBTRACTED to Heading to obtain Track
QB: Starboard Drift -
- Track lies to RIGHT of heading
- Drift added to heading to obtain track.
6 elements of Triangle of Velocities -
- Heading
- TAS
- Wind Direction
- Wind Speed
- Track
- Ground Speed
If 4 known, 2 can be determined.
