Chapter 4: Tour of The Cell Flashcards

Describe the importance of microscopes in understanding cell structure and function.

1
Q

Cell Theory

A

states that

Cells are the basic building blocks of all organisms (living things).

All organisms are composed of at least one cell.

All cells come only from other living cells.

Q

Magnification & Resolution

A

Magnification is the increase in an object’s image size compared with its actual size.

Resolution is a measure of the clarity of an image. In other words, it is the ability of an instrument to show two nearby objects as separate.

Q

Why are Cells so Small?

A

A) The microscopic size of most cells provides a large surface-to-volume ratio.

B) The plasma membrane is a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins.

Q

Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes

A

All cells have a plasma membrane, D N A, ribosomes, and cytosol.

Eukaryotic cells are distinguished by having a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles that perform functions.

Prokaryotic cells are smaller and simpler in structure than are eukaryotic cells. This is because prokaryotic cells do NOT have a membrane-enclosed nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles found in eukaryotic cells.
