Primary sources of EU law
Treaties
Treaties
The only primary source of EU law. Treaties are signed by the Head of Government/Heads of State of all member states
Secondary sources of EU law
Directives and Regulations
Directives
A form of EU secondary legislation address to one or more member states requiring them to amend their national law to meet its broad objectives
Regulations
A form of EU secondary legislation which is directly applicable in all member states
European commision
An executive body with considerable political power.
It can plan policies and propose new laws to achieve the aims of the WU Treaties.
Council of the European Union
Has legislative function and it is responsible together with the European Parliament for passing the laws of the European Union proposed by The European Commission
European Parliament
An Elected law-making body with number of legislative functions.
Has 705 Democratically elected MEPs
European Council
The heads if State/Government set out the general political direction and priorities of the EU
Court of Justice of the European Union
Consists of one judge from each member state of European Union advised by nine independent Advocates-General.
