Chapter 4 Terms Flashcards
Kinematics
The study of how things move
Dynamics
The study of why things move
Force
The cause of an object to start, stop, or change direction
Contact Force
Direct touching
Field force
Force that acts at a distance (ex. Gravity, magnets, static electricity)
Law of Inertia
An object at rest remains at rest, and an object that’s moving will continue to move with constant velocity unless it experienced a net external force
External Force
And force that results from the interaction between the object and it’s environment
Internal Force
A force that originates within the object itself (they can’t change the objects velocity)
Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist change
Mass
A measure of the resistance of an object to change in its motion due to a force (inertia)
Law of Acceleration
The acceleration of an object is proportional to the net force, and inversely proportional to the mass of the object (net force = ma)
Law of Interactions
For every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction
Drag Force
The force exerted by fluid on an object, moving through the fluid
Terminal Velocity
The type of constant velocity involving drag force
Friction
Force that always opposes the direction of motion
