- They were fleeing sectarian violence, so religious egalitarianism had to be a thing
- They were very Christian, but wanted to distance themselves from Anglicanism, hence Protestantism

Campaign Strategies
Everyone used to appeal as much as possible to independence. In 2004, Bush’s campaign decide to appeal to the baseline beliefs of his base to mobilize them more. He was successful.
Is this at fault for increasing divisiveness?
Progressive Protestants
Part of the democratic party.
Left is not free from religion, just less religious rhetoric and are welcoming to atheists, agnostics, and non-Christians.
They are secularists: no religion in the public sphere.
