Chapter 4: Personal Computer Components Flashcards
Describe data storage capacity
Bits, Bytes, Kilobytes, Megabytes, Terabytes
Describe speed of Electronics
Hertz, Kilohertz, Megahertz, Gigahertz
RAM/ROM which is volatile/nonvolatile
RAM is volatile needs power to maintain data
ROM is nonvolatile does not need power to maintain data
ECC
Error Correcting Code- Uses extra bits and algorithms to detect and correct errors
DIMM
Dual Inline Memory Module- dual or single sided RAM slot
SRAM
Very fast and expensive used for cache memory
DRAM
Slower and cheaper than SRAM, has a higher capacity and is the main memory on the computer
VRAM
Specialized RAM for video adapters
Riser Card (daughter card)
Used to expand a computers bus and allow the insertion of other cards
Riser Card ( AMR/CNR)
A small expansion card containing multiple functions
Three categories for mass storage devices
Magnetic, optical, and solid state drives
Types of magnetic disk drives
Floppy disk drives, Hard disk drives, and tape drives
Types of optical drives
CD, DVD, and Blu-ray
Solid State Drives
Have no moving parts and use large capacity nonvolatile memory
Hot swapping
Connecting or disconnecting drives without shutting down the the system
