Why do we network?
- To share data
- To communicate
- To share resources eg. Printers and scanners
Parts of a data packet
Header, Body, Footer
What is contained in the Header of a data packet?
- Destination addresses - IP address
- Senders address
- Packet number - out of the total
- Sequence number/Packet length
- ACK number (if set) - tells the sender if the packet had been received
- Checksum/digit - for error detection
- Time to live
- Padding - separate header and body
What does the router do?
Date to be sent between different types of networks
Which is used to connect computers and devices to the Internet
Can be used to connect a want to
WAN to a LAN
Define router
- An intelligent device that can perform the following:
- Read read, met data and decide to send it
- Decide the fastest route
- It can format the data suit the destination network
- Filter traffic
- Exchange protocol, information across networks
Define IP address
Internet protocol address - unique number assigned to every device connected to the internet
Is subject to change depending on location
Define MAC address
Media access control
Unique identifier given to every device by the manufacturer
Does not change
What is a Routing table
Stores all of the IP addresses of the various destinations to know where to send the data packets and the route to use
