Chapter 4 (module 2) terms Flashcards
pharmacogenetics
the study of the variability in drug response due to heredity
allele
one of two or more versions of a gene; an individual inherits two alleles for each gene (ex. Hh)
gene
region of DNA containing genetic info
genome
the totality of genetics info found in an organism’s DNA/RNA
genomics
the study of the combination of the environment (personal factors + genetic info)
genotype
an individual’s collection of genes
phenotype
visible characteristics of a genotype
polymorphisms
natural variations in a gene, DNA sequence, or chromosome that have NO adverse effects on the individual
extensive metabolizers
have an ordinary response to drugs
intermediate metabolizers
dec in drug metabolism; inc concentration of the parent drug (possible dec in responsiveness)
poor metabolizers
dec in drug metabolism; higher levels of patent drug but with little therapeutic benefit (inc risk for adverse drug response)
ultrarapid metabolizers
inc drug metabolism; results in possible dec in effectiveness
