Chapter 4 - metals Flashcards
Write a list of the properties of a typical transition metal.
Good conductor of heat and electricity
Strong
Malleable
High melting point
Where in the periodic table will you find the transition metals?
The central block
Which metal out of the following is not a transition metal?
- Copper
- Aluminum
- Gold
Aluminum
Why is copper used so much in plumbing?
Its unreactive and malleable
Why is gold alloyed with copper in many wedding rings?
To make it stronger and cheaper
Silver and gold are good conducters of electricity. Why is copper used in wires instead of these metals?
Copper is cheaper than Silver and gold
Why are aluminum alloys used extensively in the aircraft industry?
Aluminum is light-weight
Why are copper alloys more suitable for making coins than pure copper
In alloying copper, differently sized atoms of other metals are introduced to the regular layers of copper atoms, disorting the layers and making it more difficult for them to slide over each other.
How can iron be obtained from its ores?
Through reduction. Since iron is found in iron oxide, iron can be extracted using carbon, producing carbon dioxide.
This is done in blast furncaces.
Iron ore
Haemetite.
Why is iron obtained from the blast furnace brittle?
The iron obtained from the blast furnace is 96% iron and the rest is carbon. The carbon makes it brittle
How does cast iron differ from pure iron in its compostion and properties?
Cast iron is made up of 4% carbon while pure iron is just made up of iron. Cast iron is brittle and relatively stronger than pure iron.
Name the raw material used in blast furnace for extraction of iron
Haematite
Air
Coke
Limestone
Name the main reducing agent in the blast furnace and write a balanced symbol equation for this formation.
Carbon monoxide
Co2 + O -> 2CO2
A small amout of iron oxide is reduced by solid carbon. Write a balanced symbol equation for its reaction.
iron(iii)oxide + carbon -> iron + carbon dioxide
