chapter 4 key terms Flashcards
photosynthesis
when an organism uses sunlight to make sugar in a process
producer
an organism that can make their own food (plants)
consumer
organisms that get their food and energy from eating other organisms
decomposer
a consumer that gets its food from breaking down orgnic matter from dead organisms
cellular respiration
the process of breaking down carbohydrates to yield energy
food chain
the path in which energy is transformed from one organism to the next
food web
more organisms that shows a feeding relationship
trophic level
each step through which energy is transferred in a food chain
carbon cycle
a process is which carbon is cycled between the atmosphere, land, water and organisms
nitrogen-fixing bacteria
can fix atmospheric nitrogen into a useful form called ammonia
nitrogen cycle
the biogeochemical cycle by which nitrogen is converted into multiple chemical forms as it circulates among atmosphere, terrestrial, and marine ecosystems.
phosphorus cycle
the movement of phosphorus is from environment to organism
ecological succession
is a gradual process of change and replacement of some or all of the species
primary succession
a more common type of succession
secondary succession
occurs in areas where an ecosystem has previously existed
