attitude
a persons beliefs, values, or opinions toward engaging in healthy behaviour
acute illness
an illness or disability that appears suddenly & lasts for a short period, usually less than 3 months (symptoms can be severe)
chronic illness or persistent illness
an ongoing illness or disability. slow or gradual in onset. that may or may not grow worse over time. because persistent illness cannot be cured, the focus of care is focused on preventing complications of the illness
cognitive health
well being in the intellectual dimension achieved through an active, creative mind
determinants of health
most important factors - such as life style, environment, human biology, & health services. - that determine health status in an individual or in a community
dimensions of health
the total aspects of a persons health ( physical, emotional, social, spiritual, cognitive) holistic health takes all of these aspects into consideration
disability
the loss of physical or mental function
discrimination
the unfair treatment of people on the basis of such aspects as their physical characteristics, health history, or group membership
emotional health
well being in the emotional dimension, achieved when people feel good about themselves
environmental health
all the physical, chemical, and biological factors external to a person. and all the related factors affecting behaviours. it includes the assessment and control of those environmental factors that can potentially affect health
equitable
fair, reasonable & just
gender
the condition of being male or female; the gender of a person
genetic endowment
genetic makeup that predisposes individuals to a wide range of responses that affect health status
health
the state of well being in all dimensions of ones life
holism
a concept that considers the whole person. the whole person has physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual dimensions
