Chapter 4-Into To The Cells Flashcards
Aton van Leeuwenhoek
First microbiologist. Improved microscopes by studying pond water
Matthias Schleiden
Botanist. Stated “All plants were made of cells.”
Theodor Schwann
Zoologist. Stated “All animals were made of cells.”
Rudolf Virchow
Came up with the first cell theory. Stated “All new cells can only be produced by the division of old cells.”
Light Microscope
Magnifies cells up to 1,000 times. Example: Protist: Euglena, which is a single-cells freshwater organism that eats algae.
Electron Microscope
Allows greater magnification and reveals cellular details by either a 2D image or scanning
Eukaryotic cells
Partitioned into functional compartments. All other forms of life are composed of more complex eukaryotic cells
Prokaryotic cells
Are small simple cells. They do not have a membrane- bound nucleus. But they do have a plasma membrane
Examples of Prokaryotic Cells
Bacteria and Archaea
Examples of Eukaryotic Cells
Protists, Fungi, Plants, and Animals
Plants Cells have …..that Animal Cells don’t
Chloroplast, Vacuoles, and Rigid Cell Walls
Tight Junctions
Also known as Impermeable Junctions. Binds Cells together into leakproof sheets
Desmosones Junctions
Also known as Anchoring Junctions. Prevents cells from being pulled apart
Gap Junctions
Allows communications between cells
Microvilli
Finger-like projections that increase surface area for absorption/secretion
