Chapter 4: Integumentary System Flashcards
1- epidermis
2- dermis
3-hypodermis (subcutaneous layer )
1- outer layer of skin waterproof layer that functions as protection / contain melanocytes that secrete melanin
2- deep layer of skin that contains sweat / oil glands. Also contain tiny muscles attached to the hair follicles
3- layer of loose connective tissue that connects the skin to surface muscles . Contains blood vessels and fat
Adipocytes
Fat cells that make up most of the subcutaneous layer
Arrector pili muscles
Tiny muscles that attach to the hair follicle
Hair
Kernatinized fibers that arise from hair follicles
Hair follicle
Area from which hair grows . Located in dermis
Keratin
Protein found in hair and nails that promotes hardness
Keratinocytes
Cells found in the epidermal layer of the skin that secrete keratin and assist in waterproofing the body
Melanocytes
Cells that give color to skin , eyes , and hair by secreting the pigment melanin . Located in dermis
Nail
Translucent plate made of keratin that covers and protects the end of fingers and toes
Sebaceous gland
Glands that secret oil (sebum) into the hair follicle and onto the epidermis
Sebum
Oil secretion of the sebaceous gland
Sudoriferous gland
Glands that secrete sweat and assist in body temperature regulation

Abrasion
Injury resulting in removal of the superficial layer of the skin
Abscess
A circumscribed collection of pus cause baby bacterial infection
Acne
Inflammation disease of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles
Albinism
Inherited disorders with deficiency of pigment in the skin , hair, eyes
Burn
Injury to the skin caused by heat
Superficial burn
Burn involving only the epidermis . Cause redness and swelling but no blisters ( first degree burn )
Partial thickness burn
A burn involving the epidermis and dermis . Involve blisters . Second degree burn
Full thickness burn
A burn involving destruction of the entire skin . Severe scarring. Extends into subcutaneous fat, muscle , and bone . Third degree burn
