Chapter 4: Immune Recognition Flashcards
Foreign Pattern Recognition
Recognition of structures that are shared by microbial pathogens and not present on mammalian cells
E.g. LPS, Viral DNA/RNA, PAMP’s recognised by PRR’s
Danger (immune recognition)
Recognition of structures found in/on stressed or dying cells
E.g. DAMP’s (heat shock proteins)
Missing/Altered Self (immune recognition)
Changes in self proteins such as Dow regulation of MHC I
Antigen
Any substance that may be specifically bound by and Immunoglobulin or T cell receptor
A target of the immune response
Immunogen
Substance which induces specific immune response e.g. Hapten Carrier
Determinant/Epitope
Antibody contact site on antigen
Dinitrophenyl (DNP)
Small chemical group which binds but does not trigger immune response
Hapten
Small organic moiety attachable to larger structure
Target of antibody response
Non immunogenic
Carrier (hapten carrier complex)
Usually protein or polypeptide required for immune response
Must be covalently linked to hapten to create antibody to hapten
