Morals
Principles or rules that define what is right and wrong
Ethics
Process of studying moral standard and examining how we should interpret and apply them in various situations
Research ethics
Concerns the responsibility of researchers to be honest and respectful to all individuals who are affected by their research h studies on their report of studies results
Utilitarianism
Ethical behaviors are those where the total positive outcomes are greater that total negative outcomes.
Deontological approach
Every person should be treated fairly, humanely, ethically, no matter who they are. We must protect the rights of every individual.
Application of Ethics to Psych research
Seek approval from IRB/ISRB No harm Dignity and competence Consent Deception Confidentiality Debriefing
Deception by omission
Passive deception
Not telling someone about the study (explain after)
Deception by commission
Active deception
Specifically lying or misleading participants about some aspect
Confidentiality
Any info that you obtain from participating is kept secret/private
Anonymity
Info attained from a research participant cannot be traced back to that participant
Debriefing
Finishing study sit down participants make sure they’re okay
Fraud
Explicit effort to falsify data
Error
Honest mistake that occurs in research process
