Chapter 4 : Early Motor Development Flashcards
Why is Early Motor Development Important?
Foundational skills, increased opportunities, relationship between cognition, motor, and perception
Describe Two types of Motor Behavior
Spontaneous movements, which are not caused by external stimuli, as well as reflexive movements which is caused by specific external stimuli
What are some examples of Spontaneous Movement in Infants
Arm movements like practice for reaching, and supine kicking that initially leads to walking
What is an example of an infantile reflex?
The babinski reflex should disappear over time, but returning to reflex in adulthood may indicate neurological problems
What are Primitive reflexes?
Those to faciliate survial, from the brain stem, bron with them, dissapear within 6-12 months
what are some examples of promitve relfescses?
babinski, Assymetrical tonic neck reflex, palmar grasping, Moro, sucking
what are postural reactions?
Reactions to external stimuli, when psture is thrown off, begin around 2-4 months, usually to protect themelves when being moved
what is an example of postural reaction?
Derotive righting (rolling ovger), labyrinthe righting (tilting infant head moves), Parachute (tilt baby, arms go out)
what are locomotor refleces?
resembles a later pattern of locomotor skills
descrive locomotor relfexes
tapping a baby sole o floor begins walking pattern of legs, swimming, cralwing
waht is the purpose of reflexes?
WHat are motor milestones
describe rate limiters or controllers
describe posutal and control in infants
