Chapter 4: Discrete Random Variables Flashcards
Random Variable
A RV assigns a numerical value to any outcome in a random experiment.
Discrete Rv
A RV that has either a finite or countable number of values
Continuous RV
A RV that has a whole interval of possible values
Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF)
the probability that x is less than or equal to a particular value of y
Probability Distribution of a Discrete RV x
The list of each possible value of x, and the probabilities that x takes those values in a trial of a random experiment.
The probabilities in a probability dist. of a RV X must satisfy:
- P(x) between 0 and 1
2. Sum of P(x) = 1
Mean of a discrete RV
average across many repeated trials of a random experiment
Question 25!!!!
Bernoulli Process with parameters n and p…
consists of a sequence of n identical trials of a random experiment such that each trial :
1. Produces one of two possible outcomes (success with probability (P) and failure with probability (q=1-p)
- Stands independent of any other trial
Binomial RV with parameters n and p:
A discrete RV that counts the number of successes of a Bernoulli Process with parameters n and p
