Chapter 4-Direct Objects (& D.O. Pronouns) Flashcards
Direct Objects-Intro
A complete sentence always has a subject (the person or thing performing the action) and a conjugated verb (the action). It may contain an optional element, such as a direct object.
The direct object (el complemento directo) receives the action of the verb. It is the word that answers the questions What? or Whom? and may refer to a thing or a person.
Direct Object Examples
Voy a probar EL FLAN. - I’m going to try THE FLAN. (WHAT am I going to try? The FLAN: a direct object)
No veo A NUESTRO CAMARERO. - I don’t see OUR WAITER. (WHOM do I not see? Our WAITER: a direct object)

The position in the sentence
In English, direct object pronouns are always placed after the verb, but in Spanish the placement depends on the verbal form used in the sentence.
- Place a direct object pronoun directly in front of a single, conjugated verb.
- With a verb phrase (conjugated verb + infinitive), place the direct object pronoun directly before the conjugated verb or attach it to the end of the infinitive. Never place object pronouns between the two verbs.
