Chapter 4)Design and manufacture Flashcards
What is the difference between the Brinell and the Vickers destructive testing?
Vickers uses a pyramid punch unlike Brinell which is spherical
What is an example of toughness testing?
Holding a material in the vice and hitting it with a hammer, if it bends hen it is not very tough
How is magnetic testing done in metals?
The metal is sandwiched in between two magnets
Iron filings are out on top
Where be particles leave a space it indicates any defects in the metal
Describe ultrasonic testing
A probe is put on top of the metal
The probe sends blips to the machine any change in these blips indicates a defect
What is the difference between destructive and non-destructive testing?
Destructive testing means that the material tested will be physically damaged I.e it will have a hole or dents ion in it
What is acid pickling?
Metal is cleaned with sulphuric acid removing any oxides and exposing any cracks on the metals surface
