Chapter 4 and 5 vocabulary Flashcards
One-half the distance between the nuclei of identical atoms that are bonded together.
Atomic Radius
A measure of the ability of an atom in a chemical compound to attract electrons from another atom.
Electronegativity
The energy required to remove an electron
Ionization energy
the reduction of the positive charge felt by the outer/valence electrons due to the presence of inner/core electrons
Reactivity
Is an atom or bonded group of atoms with a positive or negative charge
Ion
States that atoms tend to gain, lose or share electrons in order to acquire a full set of eight valence electrons.
Octet Rule
States that it is fundamentally impossible to know precisely both the velocity and position of a particle at the same time.
Heisenberg uncertainty principle
Says that each electron must occupy the lowest energy orbital available
Aufbau Principle
States single energy electrons must occupy each equal-energy orbital. Before additional electrons with opposite spins can occupy the same level orbitals.
Hunds rule
A maximum of two electrons can occupy a single orbital but must have opposite spins.
Pauli´s exclusion principle
