Chapter 4: Adaptations Flashcards
What is physiological ecology?
It is the study of interactions between organisms and the physical environments that influence their survival and persistence
Why is actual distribution different than potential distribution?
Due to interactions with other organisms, such as competition that may constrain the geographic range
What is climate envelope?
It is the range of conditions over which a species occurs.
What is acclimation
Adjusting to stress through behaviour or physiology. On the individual level
What are eco types?
Populations with adaptations to unique environments
What are the downsides of acclimatization and adaptation?
- investment of energy and resources
- trade offs can affect survival and reproduction.
What is dormancy?
Dormancy is a state in which little or no metabolic activity occurs, to survive periods of extreme heat or cold
How do ectotherms regulate body temperature?
Through energy exchange with the external environment.
How do endothermic regulate body temp?
Rely primarily on internal heat generation mostly birds and mammals
What is matrix potential energy?
Energy associated with attractive forces on surfaces of large molecules inside cells or on surfaces of soil particles.
What determines the water content in soil?
- gravitational potential
- matric potential
What is osmotic potential?
Water flowing from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration.
Hyperosmotic
More saline than environment
