Q

What is a STRONG acid?

A

A strong acid releases ALL its hydrogen atoms into solution as H+ ions and COMPLETELY DISSOCIATES in aqueous solution.

Q

What is a WEAK acid?

A

A weak acid only releases a proportion of its available hydrogen atoms into solution as H+ ions. It PARTIALLY DISSOCIATES in aqueous solution.

Q

What is a BASE and what is an ALKALI?

A

A base neutralises an acid to form a salt.

An alkali is a base that dissolves in water releasing hydroxide (OH-) ions into the solution.

Therefore, all alkalis are bases, but not all bases are alkalis.
