Chapter 4 - Acids and redox Flashcards
Strong acid
an acid that dissociates completely in solution (aqueous) by releasing all of its hydrogen atoms into solution as H+ ions
Weak acid
an acid that dissociates only partially in solution (aqueous) by releasing a small proportion of its hydrogen atoms into solutions as H+ ions
Base
a compound that neutralises an acid to form a salt
Alkali
a type of base that dissolves in water forming hydroxide ions OH-(aq) ions
Titration
a technique used to accurately measure the volume of one solution that reacts exactly with another solution
Standard solution
a solution of known concentration
Oxidation number
a measure of the number of electrons that an atom uses to bond with atoms of another element
Redox reaction
a reaction involving reduction and oxidation
Reduction
gain of electrons or a decrease in oxidation number
Oxidation
loss of electrons or an increase in oxidation number
