Chapter 4 Flashcards
what is inertia?
inertia is the object’s resistance to motion.
what is work?
Work is when a force acts upon an object to cause a displacement of the object.
what is momentum?
momentum is “mass in motion.”
what is the equation used to find the momentum of an object?
momentum= (mass) x (velocity)
what are examples of contact forces?
friction, buoyancy, normal, tension, air resistance.
what are some non-contact forces?
magnetic,
electrostatic,
gravitational.
what is net force?
the overall force acting on an object after all the forces are combined.
what is kinetic energy?
the energy of an object due to the object’s motion.
what is potential energy?
the energy that comes from the object’s position (off from the ground.)
what is power?
power is the rate at which work is done or energy is transferred.
what is the formula for power?
Power = work/ time
what is the formula for work?
work = force x distance
what is static friction?
static friction is the friction that prevents an object from moving when a force is applied.
what is rolling friction?
the friction between the ground and the wheel to allow the wheel to roll
how do balanced forces impact the motion of an object?
balanced forces do not change the motion of the object.
could keep a object in a constant velocity or at rest.
