Chapter 4 Flashcards
Where is sandbanks
Peninsula that depresses Poole harbour from Poole bay
South coast
West of Bournemouth
Dorset and connected to mainland by the road shore and bank road
Stretches across the harbour and is connected to the sthdland penisula via chain ferry
Who maintains peninsula ?
Collective organisations for Poole harbour commission , Poole borough council and environment Amgen you
What are the strategies called that were implemented on the peninsula
2 bags shoreline management plan ( sediment cells covering Poole bay and Christchurch bay)
Why do we manage sandbanks
Popular tourist destination - blue flag, clear water, gentle slope
Provides protection and shelter from waves for Poole harbour - WATER sports
Harbour entrance would clog up with sediment carried by LSD + many yacht clubs and marinas eg salted s
Entrance to Poole harbour - used by many cross channel ferries
High value commercial properties eg sandbanks hotel
Residential properties are in high demand and command premium prices - 4th most expensive in world per m2- large and detached is 10 mil , apartments - 2 mil
How is it managed - rock grounds
Deep and wide beach
No longshore drift
Trap sediment
Stop is entering harbour and keep it free for ships
Absorb wave energy and reduce erosion - without grounds there would be 1.6m pa)
Beach nourishment and reprofiljng -
Sand dredged from offshore bars
Pumped into beach or sprayed
£20 / m3, but recently dumping sediment dreaded from coast harbour - waves bring closer so don’t have to pay for reprofiljng = £3/m3
How much sediment has been added to Poole bay beaches
3.5 million m 3
Sea wall
Remains
Beach recharge has buried it
LESS effective
Not needed
Dune regeneration
Small embryo dune
Madam grass - stabilises
Destroyed by people in summer
Future threats
Sea levels could rise by 0.6m in next 100 years
Flooding
Banks road - cut off end of pensinsula to mainland ( lowest and narrowest- 2m above sea level and 50m wide)
Over development - difficult to manage
If no management strategies - £18 million of damage to residential properties in next 20 years
