Chapter 4 Flashcards
What is an ecotone?
Transition areas that contain species from bordering ecosystems
What does an ecological niche include?
Includes habitat, place in food web
What are Canada’s terrestrial biomes?
Tundra,taiga, deciduous forest, and grassland
What is muskeg?
Layer of permafrost that never melts and it has bad drainage
What is the profundal zone?
The region of the lake below the limnetic zone in which there is insufficient light
What are the four factors that affect the terrestrial ecosystems ?
Soil, temperature, water and sunlight
What are the four factors affecting aquatic ecosystems?
Chemical environment, temperature and sunlight, water pressure and seasonal variations
what are the layers of soil?
Litter, topsoil, subsoil and bedrock
What are the three types of forestry practice?
Slash and burn, clear-cutting and selective cutting
What is a prescribed burn?
A controlled fire set intentionally in a designated area
What is the difference between ogliotrophic and eutrophic lakes?
Ogliotrophic is deep and cold where as eutrophic shallow and warm
What are the four main factors that limit populations and communities?
Biotic potential, limiting factors, carrying capacity and limits if tolerance
What is an example of density independent and density dependant factor
Density-independent: fire
Density-dependant: disease
What are some indicators if water quality?
Bacteria, dissolved oxygen, and biological oxygen demand
What are some changes in Alberta lakes?
Receding shoreline, increased salinity, and decreased oxygen levels
