Chapter 4: Flashcards
Determinism
The concept that all events (physical, mental, and behavioral) result from specific casual factors
Formulating Theories
A sample theory: media violence contributes to youth violence
A good theory doesn’t just sound appealing. It must imply testable predictions, called hypotheses… they specify what results would support our theory and what results would fail to support it
Hypotheses
A tentative and testable explanation of the relationship between 2 or more event variables
Correlation
When one trait or behavior accompanies another, we say the two correlate
- Positive correlation
- Negative correlation
Experimentation
When we conduct an experiment we can control ore factors and therefore make a greater claim to cause and effect
Placebo
An inert substance or condition
Independent Variable
The predictor variable
Dependent Variable
Outcome measure
