Default router or gateway
The router used to send packets to a destination IP located on a different subnet than the source IP
Routing table
A list of routes in a router that contains destination subnet and mask, the outgoing router interface, and IP of the next-hop
IP network
An IPv4 class A, B, or C network. Also called a classful network
IP subnet
A sub-division of an IP network
IP packet
Data encapsulated within an IP header
Routing protocol
Method by which routers can exchange information about routes to reach subnets in a particular network
DDN
Dotted decimal notation, format used to identify IPv4 addresses
IPv4 address
Version of the internet protocol defined by RFC 791 and standardized in 1980
Unicast address
An IP address that represents a single interface
Subnetting
The process of subdividing class A, B, or C networks smaller groups
Hostname
The alphanumeric identification of an IP host
DNS
An application layer protocol which maps host names to their IP addresses
ARP
Address Resolution Protocol. Used to map an IP address to a MAC address. Defined in RFC 826
Ping
An Internet Control Message Protocol echo message and its reply, used to test network reachability
