Chapter 4 Flashcards
Population
group of individuals of the same species living in the same area or interbreeding and sharing genetic information
Species
all individuals that are capable of interbreeding
population dynamics
the general study of population changes
Crude Birth Rate
of births per 1,000 people per year.
Crude Death Rate
of deaths per 1,000 people per year
Fertility rate
of children expected to be born to a woman during her childbearing years
Rate of Natural Increase
Birth rate minus death rate, implying annual rate of population growth not including migration
Doubling Time
number of years it takes for a population to double
Infant Mortality Rate
annual # of deaths of infants under age 1 per 1,000 live births
GNP Per Capita
gross national product: which includes the value of all domestic and foreign output, per person
Logistic Growth Curve
S-shaped growth curve that is generated by the logistic growth equation. In the logistic, a small population grows rapidly, but the growth rate slows down, and the population eventually reaches a constant size.
Logistic Carrying Capacity
upper population limit
zero population growth
stabilized population
Demographic Transition
3 stage pattern of change in birth rates, death rates that occur between process of industrial and economic development
Human Carrying Capacity
estimate of the # of Humans who could inhabit Earth at the same time
