Chapter 4 Flashcards
What are the two types of igneous rocks?
Extrusives and Intrusives
Intrusives
Igneous rocks that cool slowly underground. Have large crystals. Ex: Granite
Extrusives
Igneous rocks that cool quickly on the surface. Have tiny crystals or are glassy. Ex: Obsidian and pumice
Aphanitic
An extrusive texture where the crystals are too fine to be distinguished with out a microscope. Comes from magma cooling quickly.
Pyroclastic
Material fragments ejected explosively into the air. Ex: Pumice, ash, tuff
Glassy
Mo minerals present and looks like glass
Vesicular
Void spaces where there were gas bubbles.
Porphyritic
Mixed texture. Shows that there were two cooling processes.
Phaneritic
Coarse and crystalline texture. Comes from slow cooling.
Pegmatitic
Extremely coarse and crystalline.
Mafic
Low percentage of silica. Is dark colored.
Intermediate
Intermediate percentage of silica and is a intermediate color.
Felsic
High percentage of silica. Light in color.
Volcano
A hill or mountain that forms from the accumulation of lava that erupts at the surface.
Plutons
Large igneous bodies that cool underground. Intrusive.
