Identification in terms of dead or living person is done according to one or both of the following principles
1- Identification through reconstruction and classification. Age, sex, height, race etc.
2- identification thought comparative studies. Fingerprints, photos, scars, operation scars, prosthesis. Impressions of bite marks can be compared to teeth.
In a mass disaster the following issues are at stake
1- Number of individuals involved
2- Identity of each individual based on age, sex, race, personal identification marks such as scars, jewelry, tattoos, forensic odontology, or dentistry, molecular DNA.
3- Causes of death in each individual
Heart diseases, intoxication, carbon monoxide poisoning
When examining a skeleton the following questions have to be answered
1- Are the remains bones and specifically human bones.
2- How many peoples bones are involved.
3- How long have the bones been there.
4- What are the characteristics of each skeleton
5- Age, gender, race, height, identification marks of skeletons, signs of trauma.

Identification can be difficult in the following situations
1- Where bodies are mutilated, esp where head and limbs are missing.
2- Where bodies are decomposed.
3- If bodies are burnt and charred.
4- If there is only a skeleton or parts thereof.
5- In case of mass disaster where mutilation and charring of bodies are common.
