Chapter 4 Flashcards
What types of nutrients make up the bulk of what provide humans energy
Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins
What do the complex carbs consist of?
starches and fiber
What do the simple carbs consist of?
sugars
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants convert light from the sun and chlorophyll into carbohydrate.
How does photosynthesis work?
Water absorbed through a plant’s roots and carbon dioxide absorbed by its leaves combine to create glucose, a single sugar.
What is the purpose of glucose for plants?
It provides energy for the work of all the cells of the stem, roots, flowers, and fruits of a plant
Where do carbohydrates come from (excluding unnatural sources)?
Almost exclusively from plants; milk is the only animal derived product that provides significant quantities of carbohydrates
What are the two types of sugars?
Monosaccharides and Disaccharides
Three Monosaccharides
Fructose, Glucose, and Galactose
Three Disaccharides
Sucrose, Maltose, and Lactose
