Chapter 4 Flashcards
Radioactiviity
Elements that give off rays and particles - involves protons, neutrons and sometimes electrons
Mass defect Protons
Relating to the change in a particle. Has +1 charge - always repelling forces trying to force protons apart - highly compressed spring waiting to uncoil
Strong Force
Keeps the nucleus together - Has a limited range - any nucleus too big will be unstable
Neutrons
Acts like a glue for the nucleus - attracted to protons and other neutrons by the strong force
Binding Energy
Comes from the particles themself when protons - neutrons combine, they release binding energy - More stable nucleus, greater binding energy
Nucleus
Smalls nuclei want to combine to become bigger - Larger nuclei are unstable and often want to break apart to become smaller ones
Mass defect
The closer to iron the more mass defect - iron has the most mass defect - if one gets closer to iron, it releases energy - if one gets further away from iron, it absorbs energy
Critical mass
The better amount of mass to sustain the reaction chain the lower critical mass - the worser amount of mass to sustain the reaction chain the high critical mass
Band of stability
All isotopes that are stable
