Chapter 4 Flashcards
What is energy
The capacity to do work
What is Potential energy
Stored energy
What is Kinetic energy
The energy of motion
Explain the law of conservation of energy
The total energy in a system does not change. Energy can not be created or destroyed.
What is calorie (cal)
The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1g of water by 1° C.
What is Joule (J)
Another unit of energy
How many Joules (J) in 1 Kilojoules (KJ)
1,000 J = 1 KJ
How many calories (cal) in 1 kilocalories (kcal)
1,000 cal = 1 kcal
How many calories (cal) in 1 kilocalories (kcal)
1,000 cal = 1 kcal
How many kilojoules (KJ) in 1 kilocalorie (Kcal)
1 kcal = 4.184 kj
What does existing as a solid liquid or gas depend on?
The balance between kinetic energy of its particles. As well as the strength of the interactions between particles.
What are intermolecular forces
Forces that exist between molecules
What do inner molecular forces determine
If a compound has a high or low melting point and boiling point. As well as if it is a solid liquid or gas at a given temperature.
Explain boiling point
The temperature at which a liquid is converted to a gas
Explain melting point
The melting point is the temperature at which a solid is converted to a liquid phase
