Chapter 4 Flashcards
What is a strong acid
A strong acid releases all of its hydrogen atoms into solutions as H+ ions and they completely dissociate
What is a weak acid
A weak acid is an acid that partially dissociates and only releases a small amount of H+ ions
How is an alkali different to a base
An alkali is a base that dissolves into water and releases hydroxide ions into the water OH-
What is a base
A base can neutralise an acid to form a salt
What is a salt
A salt is the product of the neutralisation of an acid by a base
What is an oxidation number
An oxidation number is bookkeeping number for the electrons involved in bonding.
What is the oxidation number of the H in metal hydrides
-1
What is the oxidation number of O in peroxides
-1
What is the oxidation number of O when bonded to F
+2
What is reduction
Reduction is the gain of electrons
What is oxidation
Oxidation is the loss of electrons
Is reduction an increase or decrease in the oxidation number
Decrease
Is oxidation an increase or decrease in the oxidation number
Increase
what is a standard solution
a standard solution is a solution of a known concentration
what is the error margin of a 100 cm^3 volumetric flask
