chapter 4 Flashcards
what are the separation techniques used on
mixtures
what are the types of separation techniques
magnetic separation
filtration
evaporation to dryness
simple distillation
paper chromatography
what is magnetic separation
separating magnetic and non magnetic materials
what is filtratrion
separating insoluble solute from solvent
what are parts in a filter
residue filter paper filter funnel filtrate
what is evaporation to dryness
heating the solvent until it evaporates and leaving the solute to set to dry
what is simple distillation
obtaining solvent in a solution
can evap to dry be used on sugar solution
no as sugar decomposes in heat so bttr to use crystalisation which is a slower process but uses less intense heat
why is teh water inlet at the bottom of the condenser
by gravity if the water outlet is at the bottom, water will flow out more easily. this is to ensure that the condenser is effectively flushed with cool water at all times to aid the condensation process
what are the processes occurring in simple distillation
boiling and condensation NOT EVAP
what is paper chromatography
separate 2 or more components dissolved in one solvent
how to tell which ink is more soluble
one furthest away from baseline is most soluble while one nearest to baseline is least soluble
