chapter 4 Flashcards
cranium
bone surrounding the human brain
8 bones of the cranium
frontal, right and left parietal, right and left temporal, occipital, ethmoid, and sphenoid
cranium structure
has an outer surface and inner surface varies based on location
cranium function
protects the brain from external environment
duramater
outermost layer
arachnoid membrane
middle layer with a delicate and fibrous membrane
subarachnoid space
CSF is produced and stored
piamater
innermost and thinnest layer
ventricular system
4 ventricles: right and left ventricle, 3rd ventricle, 4th ventricle
main function is to produce CSF and store it
function of CSF
prevent any structural damage of the cranium
-during a TBI brain swelling and blood may cause more space pushing CSF out
normal pressure hydrocephalus
a disorder associated with gait deficits, enlarged brain, ventricles in the absence of another cause
-coexist with frontal and subcortical cognitive deficits
hydrocephalus part 2
-80% of cases go unrecgonized
-tx can reverse the symptoms
focal lesions
area of damage is in 1 single location
multifocal lesions
area of damage involves mutiple isolated locations
diffuse brain injury
area of damage involves a widespread area
