Chapter 4 Flashcards
What are Solutions
a homogeneous mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent.
What is dissociation
the breaking up of a compound into simpler constituents that are usually capable of recombining under other conditions.
What is electrolytes
Substance that dissociates into ions when dissolved in water
What non electrolyte
May dissolve in water, but it does not dissociate into ions when it does so
Strong electrolytes
A strong electrolytes dissociates completely when dissolved in water
Weak electrolytes
A weak electrolytes only dissociates partially when dissolved in water
What is Precipitation reaction
is one in which dissolved substances react to form one (or more) solid products.
What is Metathesis (Exchnage) Reaction
are chemical reactions in which two hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes or alkynes) are converted to two new hydrocarbons by the exchange of carbon–carbon single, double or triple bonds.
What is net ionic equation
is the chemical equation that shows only those elements, compounds, and ions that are directly involved in the chemical reaction.
What is acid
A chemical that gives off hydrogen ions in water and forms salts by combining with certain metals.
What is bases
is a substance that can neutralize the acid by reacting with hydrogen ions.
What is acid based reaction
the chemical reactions that occur when acids and bases are mixed together.
What is neutralization reaction
is when an acid and a base react to form water and a salt and involves the combination of H+ ions and OH- ions to generate water
What is gas forming reaction
is a chemical process that produces a gas, such as oxygen or carbon dioxide
What is oxidation reduction reaction
is any chemical reaction in which the oxidation number of a molecule, atom, or ion changes by gaining or losing an electron.
