Chapter 4 Flashcards
Valence
Capacity of the atoms of an element to form chemical bonds
Electrostatic potential energy (Eel)
The energy a charged particle has because of its position, relative to another charged particle, Eel is directly proportional to the product of the charges of the particles and inversely proportional to the distance between them
Ionic bond
Bond resulting from the electrostatic of the attraction to a cation to anion
Lattice energy
Energy released when one mole of an ionic compound forms from its free ion in the gas phase
Crystal lattice
An ordered three dimensional array of particles.
Covalent bond
A bond created by two atoms sharing one or more pair of electrons
Bond length
Distance between the nuclei of two atoms joined in a bond
Bond energy
Energy needed to break one mole of a specific covalent bond in the gas phase
