Chapter 4 Flashcards
What are the four hazards associated with confined space?
Atmospheric
physical/mechanical
environmental
psychological
What is a hazardous atmosphere?
An atmosphere that may expose employees to risk of death, incapacitation, impairment or ability to self rescue
What is IDLH?
Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health and is an immediate or delayed threat to life
What are asphyxiating atmospheres?
No toxic characteristics but not enough oxygen to sustain life. Referred to as oxygen deficient.
What are way deficiency from oxygen happen?
Consumption
Absorption
Displacement
What are the dangers of oxygen enrichment?
It is above 23.5% by volume, oxygen enriched
Ways toxics can enter the body?
Absorption, ingestion, inhalation, injection
The five most common gases found in confined spaces?
Methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide
What divides the atmosphere into classes, groups, and divisions?
The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70)
What are the two classifications of equipment?
Intrinsically safe and explosion proof
What is bridging?
Grain or loose materials cling to the side of a container vessel creating a hollow space
What is claustrophobia?
Fear of a closed or confined space
